Chiang Mai , Lanna, also sometimes written as "Chiengmai" or "Chiangmai", is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand, and is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is located some 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok, among some of the highest mountains in the country. The city stands on the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river.
Wat Phra Sing - Within the walls of the ancient city are several old temples of interest. Among them, Wat Phra Sing is perhaps the largest and most interesting, although it may not seem so at first glance. Upon entering the main gate, you're greeted by a large and dusty parking area. Across the lot is a large wiharn (prayer hall) with an intricately carved front. This is your first clue that there's more here than there might appear. |

The Night Bazaar, or Kad Luang (Royal Market) as it is know by locals, is one of Chiang Mai's biggest draws. Located right in the centre of the city on Ping River, it is easily accessible and if you are in Chiang Mai a visit is almost obligatory. The market attracts huge crowds every evening and it is a great place to pick up trinkets and gifts. Given the market’s close proximity to the companies that manufacture them, the price of local handicrafts is attractively cheap here. |

Exhibition in this Chinese Yunnan Culture Center shows the ancient Yunnan Chinese lifestyle. There are stores selling local souvenir products and imported Chinese items like Chinese Tea. A restaurant serving Yunnan Chinese food throughout the day. This Chinese village is 4.5 kilometers from Pai town and has a population about 2,000. The villagers include hill tribe people, immigragrents from Yunnan and 48 are formal nationalist Chinese solders. The villagers built this culture center to attract tourists. |

This once quaint and cozy village has blossomed into one of the hot spots for budget travelers. Set in a mountain pass along a river, it can be warm during the day, but when night comes and the temperature drops, the Night Market is the place to go with a few streets closed off and lots of stalls selling about any kind of handicraft you can think of as well as tasty treat to nimble or feast on. A troupe of dancers and musicians also perform traditional song and dance while nearby pubs continue the entertainment. |

Tham Lod Cave is actually a tunnel that was formed by a river as it carved its way into a mountain of limestone. The cave’s entrance is massive with a height of 20 meters and a 50 meter width. The towering walls and ceiling of the cave is peppered with stalactites and stalagmites dating to thousands of years ago. |

This is one of the largest markets in Chiang Mai, centrally located and lying close to the Ping River. You can buy almost anything here, from fresh fruits, vegetables and spices to jewelry, clothes and, of course, hill-tribe products. Unlike the nearby touristy Night Bazaar, where most stalls are only open at night, Warowot Market is open during the day and evening, frequented more by local Thais than by tourists. Explore the maze of indoor and outdoor stalls, enjoy the chaos and color, and be ready to bargain. It is, after all, part of the fun. |
