Chiang Mai , Lanna, also sometimes written as "Chiengmai" or "Chiangmai", is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand, and is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is located some 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok, among some of the highest mountains in the country. The city stands on the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river.
Wat Phra Sing - Within the walls of the ancient city are several old temples of interest. Among them, Wat Phra Sing is perhaps the largest and most interesting, although it may not seem so at first glance. Upon entering the main gate, you're greeted by a large and dusty parking area. Across the lot is a large wiharn (prayer hall) with an intricately carved front. This is your first clue that there's more here than there might appear. |
|
| 19:00 | Dinner at the Gallery Rastaurant |
| 20:30 | Enjoy walking at Chiangmai Night Bazaar |
The Night Bazaar, or Kad Luang (Royal Market) as it is know by locals, is one of Chiang Mai's biggest draws. Located right in the centre of the city on Ping River, it is easily accessible and if you are in Chiang Mai a visit is almost obligatory. The market attracts huge crowds every evening and it is a great place to pick up trinkets and gifts. Given the market’s close proximity to the companies that manufacture them, the price of local handicrafts is attractively cheap here. |

From the temple impressive views of Chiang Mai can be seen and it remains a popular destination of foreign visitors. |

Thailand has about 860 orchid species, 473 of which can be found in and around Chiang Mai province. A visit to one of the orchid farms in the Mae Sa valley near Chiang Mai city can be a wondrous experience. Unfortunately, in the wild, massive forest destruction and the over collecting of some species is endangering many orchids. The future of many of these beautiful plants could well depend on farms and private collectors. |

Mae Sa Waterfall is another ‘iconic’ image of Chiang Mai, although it is somewhat less famous than some other sites. In addition to covered arcades packed full of shops selling every imaginable handicraft you can think of, the road to Hang Dong is rapidly being lined with individual micro-factories with fantastic showrooms displaying collections of antiques and furniture. Wood is certainly the spirit of this crafts village. |
|

| 13:00 | Traval to Borsang Village for umbrella painting |
Bor Sang Village, on highway 1006 heading east from Chiang Mai, appears to be a typical sleepy rural village, the kind the tour bus speeds by giving you just a fleeting glimpse of its two-storey wooden houses. But hidden in the tiny lanes, villagers have perfected a craft that creates the country’s most famous umbrellas. For more than 100 years, the village has been associated with the production of umbrellas made from Saa paper derived from mulberry tree bark. According to local history, a monk travelled to neighbouring Myanmar, where he came across Saa paper umbrellas that offered protection against both the sun and rain. |
